What the DC31-00178A does
The DC31-00178A is the drain pump motor on most Samsung washing machines. A small electric motor with an impeller that pushes wash water out of the tub and through the drain hose. When it fails (motor seized, impeller broken, or windings open), the washer fills and washes but won't drain.

How to install the DC31-00178A, step by step
- Unplug the washer and shut off both water valves
- Place a shallow pan and towels under the front of the washer
- Open the lower access panel (usually 2 to 3 screws at the bottom front)
- Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the pump (squeeze hose clamps with pliers)
- Disconnect the wire harness from the pump motor
- Unscrew the pump from its mounting bracket and pull it out
- Install the new pump in reverse order, hose clamps and harness back in place
- Restore power and water, run a Drain and Spin cycle to test
